Review
Pharmacological considerations in the design of anti-malarial drug combination therapies - is matching half-lives enough?
Hastings IM and Hodel EMMalaria Journal 2014, 13:62 (20 February 2014)
The paper explores the issues of combination therapies for malaria, taking the perspective that the lack of response to a particular drug is not a binary event. This is extremely important, given that the data observed over the last seven years for artemisinin insensitivity has seen a progressive shift in the parasite clearance half lives which seems to have reached a plateau, and in any case can¿t be described as an all or nothing response.

Evaluation of three rapid diagnostic tests for the detection of human infections with Plasmodium knowlesi
Foster D, Cox-Singh J, Mohamad DSA, Krishna S, Chin PP and Singh BMalaria Journal 2014, 13:60 (18 February 2014)
Three commercially available RDTs have been evaluation for the detection and diagnosis and have found them unacceptable for in the task. Depending on the RDT used, patients with P. knowlesi could be misdiagnosed as P. falciparum with OptiMAL-IT, P. vivax with Paramax-3 and, more correctly, as non-P. vivax/non-P. falciparum with BinaxNOW? Malaria. There is a need for a sensitive and specific RDT for malaria diagnosis in settings where P. knowlesi infections are common.

On the road to eliminate malaria in Sri Lanka: lessons from history, challenges, gaps in knowledge and research needs
Karunaweera ND, Galappaththy GNL and Wirth DFMalaria Journal 2014, 13:59 (18 February 2014)
The paper synthesizes information about the first global malaria eradication campaign and history of malaria in Sri Lanka and the lessons that can be learned from its failure.
