World Malaria Day Theme 2013 - 2015
"Invest in the Future. Defeat Malaria"
World Malaria Day (April 25) is fast approaching. Each year, Roll Back Malaria (RBM) partners unite their advocacy efforts around a common World Malaria Day theme. As RBM zeros in on achieving the malaria MDG by 2015, partners have agreed on a 3-year theme to call attention to the big push needed in countries to end malaria: "Invest in the future. Defeat malaria." The WMD theme provides a common platform for Partners to showcase their successes in malaria control, and unify efforts in the changing global context. As always, Partners are invited to add their own specific messages to reflect their particular area of focus. This year Partners are also invited to support #thebigpush campaign by linking it to their World Malaria Day messaging and communications. #thebigpush is a digital campaign launched on September 24 2012 as a platform for galvanizing support for global health. Malaria-endemic countries have made incredible gains in malaria in the last decade, but sustaining them will take extra efforts until the job is finished and malaria is eliminated worldwide. While efforts to prevent, diagnose and treat malaria have gained important momentum over the past years, an annual shortage of US$ 3.6 billion1 threatens to slow down progress, particularly across Africa where high-burden countries are facing critical funding gaps. Unless the malaria community can find a way to bridge the funding gaps and endemic countries? have the resources and technical support they need to implement sound malaria control plans, malaria resurgence will likely take many more lives. A three-year campaign to make good on the MDG promise & pave the way beyond 2015 On World Malaria Day 2013, the RBM Partnership will launch a three-year campaign under the theme of "Invest in the Future: Defeat Malaria." By mapping progress against key milestones on the road to 2015 and showing how the collective efforts of the global malaria community contribute to creating a healthier and more prosperous world, the RBM campaign will help mount the resources and support the malaria fight needs through 2015 and beyond. The RBM campaign will help strengthen the political will and generate the funding needed to continue averting deaths in malaria-endemic countries. It will culminate with a comprehensive report on the results reached through the collective efforts of all partners in the fight against malaria. About World Malaria Day Instituted in 2008 by the World Health Assembly, World Malaria Day is an occasion to harmonize global, regional, national and country-level advocacy efforts to maintain progress in preventing, diagnosing and treating malaria. World Malaria Day is a day to shine a spotlight on the global effort to control malaria. It is commemorated across the Roll Back Malaria Partnership and the wider health and development community as an opportunity: for endemic countries in the affected regions to draw attention to their progress and challenges in malaria control and lobby for more donor and domestic support; for new donors to join the global partnership against malaria; for research and academic institutions to flag their scientific advances to both experts and general public; and for international organisations, companies and foundations to showcase their efforts and reflect on how to scale up what has worked; for individuals to understand why malaria is a problem and take action to help solve it.

1 Overall, out of a total of US$ 6.8 billion required, US$ 3.2 billion has been mobilized, leaving a US$ 3.6 billion gap to make sure all affected countries in Africa have sufficient insecticide treated nets, effective treatments and rapid diagnostic tests for all populations at risk of malaria to achieve the target of near-zero deaths by 2015.
