News - Events World Malaria Day 25 April
Plan of Launching Ceremony on propagating "World Malaria Day 25 April 2012" in Quang Nam province, Vietnam

Implementing the direction from the Ministry of Health on commemorating the World Malaria Day 2012 with the theme given by WHO - "Sustain Gains, Save Lives: Invest in Malaria", the Institute of Malariology - Parasitology and Entomology Quy Nhon (IMPE-Quy Nhon) in coordination with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Provincial Health Department of Quang Nam will organize the Launching Ceremony on propagating "World Malaria Day 2012" on 25 April 2012 in Bac Tra My district, Quang Nam province.

Malaria is one of the biggest health problem to world's population, claiming ever high mortality and morbidity and spreading outbreaks rapidly by a mosquito bite. In many developing countries, especially Africa and South-east Asia, malaria deaths account for the highest in the overall disease pattern, becoming the greatest threat to human life and potential burden to socio-economic development.

In Vietnam, malaria control activities have received support from concerned government, local authorities and international organizations. Malaria situation of the whole country has improved considerably, but the burden of malaria is still concentrated in the coastal and highland provinces of Central Vietnam, with about 68.3% of confirmed cases and more than 43% of malaria deaths, compared with the whole country. With the indefatigable efforts from the health staff in the whole central region of Vietnam, malaria control activities have seen encouraging achievements. Furthermore, the health communication and education measures for controlling malaria in the community also played a very important role, contributing significantly to decrease the rate of malaria morbidity, mortality and result in no malaria outbreaks. However, the risk of malaria outbreaks can occur highly at any time due to contributing factors such as low awareness of malaria and its control, difficult access to malaria treatment facilities, border crossing and uncontrolled movement of population into forests and malaria-endemic areas which are out of the local authority's control. Consequently, it is difficult for health centers to manage these groups, and those who go to forests or cross border are at high risk of malaria infection.

Since 2008, according to the initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO), the annual launching ceremony "World Malaria Day" has been organized concurrently in malaria-endemic countries with different themes. The theme of the World Malaria Day 2012 is "Sustain Gains, Save Lives: Invest in Malaria". 25 April every year is the occasion that affected countries will share experience and help each other in malaria control activities; it is an opportunity for institutes of malariology to mobilize funds for scientific research to improve malaria control measures.

With the targets of further rolling back malaria, sustaining the achieved gains and celebrating "World Malaria Day 25 April 2012", the Institute of Malariology, Parasitology and Entomology Quy Nhon (IMPE-Quy Nhon) in coordination with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Provincial Health Department of Quang Nam would like to organize the launching ceremony and the march on propagating "World Malaria Day 25 April". The activity aims to raise the knowledge, attitude and practice of the community on malaria control that will contribute to reaching targets of the national malaria control programme towards malaria elimination in Vietnam. The ceremony will also bring together thousands of individuals from health experts to the general public for a unified show of support regarding anti-Malaria efforts. The ceremony will be organized at Bac Tra My district, Quang Nam province, the activities include:
