Egaten 250 mg
MoH's direction of the purchase of the anthelmintic drugs for Fascioliasis

In the first 6 months of 2009, Fascioliasis patients increase drastically in many provinces of Central Vietnam, causing a shortage of Triclabendzole tablets (Egaten 250 mg) provided by the World Health Organization (WHO) for treatment. In order to timely solve this problem and maintain a permanent supply of drugs as well as avoid the condition of drug shortage as present, the IMPE Quy Nhon reported of the disease situation to MoH for directions.

Responding to the report by the IMPE, the Ministry of Health (MoH) issued the Document No. 4245/BYT-KHTC on June 30, 2009 signed by Deputy Minister Nguyen Thi Xuyen on the purchase of the specific for Fascioliasis with the following contents:

On June 10, 2009 MoH received the Document No.173/VSR-KST from IMPE Quy Nhon on the Fascioliasis situation in Central Vietnam and had suggestions as follows:

1. Fascioliasis isn't listed in the deadly dangerous diseases which are treated free as regulations so that health centers could be able to buy drugs to treat Fascioliasis patients according to the MoH's treatment guidelines, and the payment will be made under the policies of hospital fees and medical insurance like any other common diseases.

2. The drug purchase is carried out according to the Interministerial Circular No.10/2007/TTLT-BYT-BTC issued by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance on October 10, 2007 on the tender of drugs purchase at public health centers.

At present, Fascioliasis continues to show an increasing tendency, making it necessary to timely supply drugs for patients as well as to propose measures for Fascioliasis control. The direction of MoH has created an open mechanism which helps the Institute and other health centers in the provinces with high rates of Fascioliasis infection to take the initiative in providing Egaten 250 mg drugs instead of passively waiting for the discontinuous supply from WHO as before.

Executing the MoH's guidelines, the IMPE Quy Nhon informed health departments, provincial malaria control centres/preventive centres and concerned health centers in Central Vietnam about the MoH's permit of buying the specific drugs for Fascioliasis; at the same time the Institute also prepared the procedures for the tender of Egaten purchase according to regulations so as to timely provide drugs for patients.

Hoping that with the MoH's guidance on buying the anthelmintic drugs for Fascioliasis as well as allowing the Institute to set up a comprehensive control project in the community, Fascioliasis will be controlled gradually.
