Workshop on Towards Control and Elimination of Schistosomiasis in the Mekong Sub-Region in Lao PDR
On 9-10 May, 2013, the Infectious Diseases Project held the workshop on "Towards control and elimination of Schistosomiasis in the Mekong Sub-Region" in Champasak province, Lao PDR. Participants to the workshop included representatives from 7 countries of the Mekong sub-region of China, Cambodia, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand, Lao PDR, Vietnam and experts of World Health Organization (WHO), ADB project and leaderships of the Ministry of Health of Lao PDR, Health Services of Champasak province. The Vietnamese representatives were Dr. Nguyen Van Binh, Director of Preventive Medicine (MoH), Dr. Nguyen Van Chuong, Director of IMPE-Quy Nhon and Prof. Dang Tuan Dat, former Director of the Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology of Tay Nguyen. After the opening speech of the leader of the Ministry of Health of Lao PDR and speeches of the representatives of Infectious Diseases Project in Mekong sub-region and ADB Project, the WHO's expert presented report on epidemic situation and results of Schistosomiasis control activities in Mekong sub-region. | Presidium of the workshop | | Representatives participating in the workshop | | Vietnamese representatives at the workshop |
The workshop also listened to the reports on Schistosomiasis situation and control experiments of Schistosoma-endemic countries such as Lao PDR, Cambodia, China, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam. The representatives were divided into groups to discuss on the strategy for future Schistosomiasis. | Participants to the workshop |
The workshop has unified some matters involving case detection and treatment by Praziquantel 600mg at 40mg/kg body weight. However, hyper-endemic schistosomiasis areas needed to be priority to apply control measures timely. Besides, the management of household faeces by building toilet, mass communication and education on bathing-in-lake restriction and biological therapy to intermediary host should be attached special importance. The countries of Mekong sub-region need to discuss and give plans for control activities of Schistosomiasis.
