Training course on Helminths Diagnostic Test in the provinces of Central-Western Highland, Vietnam
Under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO), the IMPE-Quy Nhon held the training course on Diagnostic Test of Helminthiasis for medical staff of provincial malaria centres/centers for preventive medicine and some provincial general hospitals of 11 Central - Western Highland provinces (Dak Lak, Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Binh Thuan, Khanh Hoa, Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, Da Nang, Thua Thien Hue, Quang Nam). The total number of trainees was 22, including 07males and 15 females; the trainees' professional qualifications: Doctors: 03, Bachelors: 08, Physicians: 02, Medical Technicians: 09. The objective of the training course is to a) impart the situation of helminthiasis infection in Central and Western Highland regions; b) disseminate the morphology of some adult helminthes andlymphatic filarial larvae, morphology of some protozoa and helminth eggs; c) practise some helminths diagnostic techniques, especially the Kato-Katz technique of stool examination.

In the first day of the training course, Dr. Nguyen Van Chuong, Director of IMPE-Quy Nhon emphasized on the importance of the helminthiasis control research in Central Vietnam, especially newly-emerged larval diseases in the region such as Toxocariasis, Cysticercosis, Gnathostomiasis, Fascioliasis, Taeniasis. After the report on helminthiasis prevention and control activities in Central Vietnam in 2006 - 2011 and the implementing direction in 2012 - 2015, Dr. Nguyen Van Chuong gave the introduction of some techniques for detection of helminthes. | The trainees practising blood smears examination |
In the following days, Mr. Bui Van Tuan, MSc., Vice-Head of Department of Parasitology continued the course with his presentation of ELISA technique for diagnosis of parasitic diseases and instructed the trainees in practising blood smear examination and some of helminths diagnostic techniques. During the training course, the trainees also had the opportunity to share lots of information involving their professional works. The training course is really effective and practical, providing participants with useful knowledge for their handling helminthiasis control and prevention activities in their provinces. | Participants to the training course |
