Deputy Minister of Health visits and works with IMPE-Quy Nhon.
Deputy Minister of Health visits and works with IMPE-Quy Nhon

On 14 March 2013 the Ministry of Health's (MoH) task force led by Assoc.Prof. Nguyen Thanh Long-Deputy Minister visited and worked with the IMPE-Quy Nhon. Accompanying the Deputy Minister were the leaderships and representatives of MoH's epartments of Organization & Personnel, Preventive Medicine, Health care Management, Planning & Finance, Medical Equipments & Projects and the MoH's Office.

On behalf of the IMPE-Quy Nhon leadership, Dr. Nguyen Van Chuong-Director reported the activities of the unit in 2012, as well as directions and suggestions of the work for 2013. The report specified the activities of controlling malaria and other parasitic and vector-borne diseases during last year. In 2012, malaria cases in the Central - Western Highland region increased by 10.06% in comparison with the same period previous year, with the Central Coastal area +6.95% higher, and the West Highlands +13.24% up.

Dr. Nguyen Van Chuong - Director of IMPE-Quy Nhon presenting the Institute's activities in 2012
and giving some of directions and suggestions for 2013

The increase of malaria cases in 2012 was due to a high proportion of malaria-endemic zones in Central Vietnam and many other factors affecting natural transmission of malaria; for examples, P.falciparum has made up a high rate and risked resisting anti-malarial drugs; the main vectors (An.minimus, An.dirus) have existed over malaria-endemic areas and tended to resurge; the malaria pathogen (malaria parasite) has been in existence still, which increase the risks of malaria transmission and outbreaks; the difficulties in managing mobilised population (people going to the forests for work, sleeping in the field huts and crossing the borders), etc.

Confronted with malaria increase, the Institute leadership had sent the urgent document to the provincial centres of malaria control/preventive medicine and provincial hospitals to give the alert of malaria and direct the strengthening of local control measures; at the same time, the leadership and involved departments of the Institute had directly guided anti-malaria activities in the provinces of increased malaria in 2012 such as Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan.

Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long highly appreciated the role of the leadership
and the effort of the IMPE's staff in epidemic control, scientific research as well as
medical examination and treatment

Besides, the Institute had carried out epidemiological surveilance of dengue vectors and evaluation of dengue situation. Especially, in first two quarters of 2012, the Institute had participated in the campaign of insecticide spraying and environmental disinfection at Ba Dien commune, Ba To district, Quang Ngai province. The Institute had also organised surveillance phases of helminthiasis control activites in the regional provinces and provided medical examination and treatment of helminth-infected patients at the Institute's specialised clinic.

On behalf of the leadership of IMPE-Quy Nhon, Dr. Nguyen Van Chuong thanked the Ministry of Health for directing and helping the Institute during its process of operation and development. Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long highly appreciated the role of the leadership and the effort of the IMPE's staff in epidemic control, scientific research as well as medical examination and treatment; however, he also added that the Institute should attach special importance to close surveillance of malaria and other parasitic and vector-borne diseases, prompt finish of new functions and regulations suitable with the present disease situation, and waste treatment in the expanding construction project of IMPE-Quy Nhon, etc.
