Hue Central Hospital provides treatment for malaria patient back from Angola

The patient, who is 19 weeks pregnant, was diagnosed with septic shock, malignant malaria, and acute liver failure, according to the hospital's deputy director, Hoang Thi Lan Huong.

Hue Central Hospital in Thua Thien-Hue Province has admitted and is closely monitoring a patient infected with severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria, who recently returned to Viet Nam from Angola.

According to the hospital's deputy director Hoang Thi Lan Huong, the female patient, 32, who is at the 19th week of pregnancy, was diagnosed with septic shock, malignant malaria and acute liver failure.

After nearly three days of intensive treatment, her health has improved; she is now awake and responsive, though her condition remains serious. She is receiving antibiotics, anti-malarial drugs, vasoactive drugs, electrolyte rehydration, and nutritional supplements, while medical staff closely monitor her haemodynamics and foetal condition.

The patient had initially experienced intermittent fever, jaundice, poor appetite, and was hospitalized with fever, abdominal pain, fatigue, and low blood pressure. Following medical consultation and foetal examination, she was transferred to the Intensive Care Department for continued monitoring.

Having lived and worked in Angola for a year, she returned to Viet Nam on March 4. The Thua Thien-Hue Province Centre for Disease Control is investigating her case and has urged local medical facilities to report any detected malaria cases promptly.

According to statistics from the Thua Thien-Hue CDC, in 2023, three cases of imported malaria were recorded (two cases of P. falciparum and one case of P. vivax) from endemic regions such as Angola, Tanzania, and Laos (no malaria cases have been recorded in the area in the past three years).

In recent years, Thua Thien-Hue Province has made notable progress in malaria prevention. In 2024, the province will maintain its focus on malaria prevention initiatives to support and protect public health.

By the end of 2022, the city of Hue and nine districts, towns in Thua Thien-Hue were recognized for eliminating the disease. Currently, 3 out of 9 districts and towns, with 8 out of 141 communes, wards, and towns, and 138 villages in Thua Thien-Hue are in low transmission settings.

According to Hoang Thi Lan Huong, malaria is an infectious disease caused by Plasmodium parasites, exclusively transmitted through Anopheles mosquitoes. The disease typically manifests with recurring symptoms of chills, fever, and sweating, which vary based on the parasite species. Malaria caused by P. falciparum can lead to severe and potentially fatal outcomes if not promptly diagnosed and treated. The disease is both treatable and preventable. As of 2023, 46 provinces, including Thua Thien Hue, have been recognized for eliminating malaria. Viet Nam aims to eradicate malaria by 2030. However, malaria remains endemic in some provinces, and there are cases of imported malaria from individuals who travel, work, or return from countries where malaria is common.
